Transportation Data Collection and Land Use Planning Internship - Two Positions (3/6/2026)

Rockingham Planning Commission (RPC) is the regional planning agency serving 27 communities in southeastern New Hampshire, providing planning, technical assistance, and data analysis to support local and regional decision-making.

RPC is seeking two Part-Time Summer Interns to assist with transportation data collection and land use planning projects in communities throughout the RPC region in southeastern New Hampshire.

The intern’s primary role will be assisting staff with fieldwork data collection and analysis for RPC’s traffic and bicycle/pedestrian counting programs. The RPC conducts traffic counts and bike/pedestrian counts on roadways, sidewalks and trails throughout the region on an annual basis. This data is used by local and state officials to prioritize transportation projects for future funding and provides overall support to transportation planning initiatives. Traffic counts are conducted using automated counters and rubber tubes, which collect data on volume, speed, and classification of vehicles. Interns will assist with installing and retrieving counting equipment, conducting field observations, organizing collected data, and supporting staff with analysis and reporting. As such, this position requires the ability to lift, move, and install traffic data collection equipment. Interns will receive training on the safe installation and handling of all equipment.

A secondary focus of this internship will include assisting staff with data collection and research related to regional development and infrastructure projects, including work related to housing, climate resilience, and environmental protection.

Additional projects may include assisting with GIS mapping and spatial analysis, transportation planning initiatives, housing and environmental planning projects, and public outreach and engagement activities

To the extent possible, assigned projects will align with each intern’s academic background and areas of interest.

Desired experience and skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or at least two years of coursework working towards a degree in geography, geology, hydrology, engineering, environmental planning, natural resources, water resources, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting fieldwork related to natural resources, infrastructure surveys, or similar research activities.
  • Strong communication, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Experience with ArcGIS software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Collector) and Microsoft Office.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Compensation:

The compensation rate for this position is up to $18.00 per hour for up to 24 hours per week.[JR1] Ideal candidates will be available to start in June and work through at least the end of August.

Transportation Planner Opening (2/17/2026)

The Rockingham Planning Commission (RPC) is seeking a Transportation Planner to join its tight-knit, award-winning team. The RPC region is a vibrant landscape of rural, suburban and urban communities located in southeast New Hampshire just an hour north of Boston, minutes from the New Hampshire beaches and a short trip from the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. The RPC enjoys a close relationship with its member communities and federal, state and regional partner organizations in the fields of transportation, land use, environmental planning, housing, and economic development. The RPC is one of nine state-designated regional planning commissions in New Hampshire and is the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization serving the New Hampshire portions of the Portsmouth and Boston Urbanized Areas.

The individual in this position will serve as a key member of the team conducting short and long-range transportation planning for the MPO region. The ideal candidate will have a background in transportation planning as well as experience working with municipal and agency officials, boards, and staff. The Transportation Planner will be involved in many aspects of the RPC’s transportation planning program including development and maintenance of the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and Long Range Transportation Plan, project and performance monitoring, bicycle and pedestrian planning, transit planning, resilience planning, public engagement, as well as providing technical assistance to communities and partner agencies. Additionally, the transportation planner may work with other RPC staff on related land use, economic development, and environmental planning projects.

Applicants should possess a bachelor’s or master’s degree in urban planning or a related discipline and one to five years of relevant professional work experience; OR any combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are necessary, and attendance at evening meetings is required. Applicants must have superior presentation and written communication skills.
